- The records were gathered and re-registered under the VOSA prefix by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency in 2003 when it was established.

The Vehicle Inspectorate was set up in 1987 from the Vehicle Inspection and Vehicle Safety Divisions of the Department of Transport. In 1988 the Inspectorate was made an Executive Agency. The role of the Inspectorate was to enforce the law on vehicle safety and environmental standards and to contribute to the maintenance and improvement of road safety and environmental standards. The Inspectorate fulfilled this primarily by testing vehicles either through its own enforcement personnel or through examiners it approved to conduct MOT Testing. In 2003 the Vehicle Inspectorate was amalgamated with the Traffic Area Network to form the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA).
