Description

Folios 345-346: Isaac Wolley, HMS Nonsuch. He encloses an affidavit. He reports that it is blowing a strong gale to Eastward and so he has been unable to go after the privateer.

Folios 347-348: enclosure with folios 345-346. An affidavit by John Ellis master of the brig The Hope of Bridlington and William Robinson sworn on 21 November 1798 before Thomas Harland. The affidavit recounts how John Ellis sailed from the River Thames bound for Bridlington. Subsequently when they were off Hornsea they saw a vessel in the distance which they thought might be an enemy and so they made for the shore with the strange vessel in pursuit. He reports that he waw the strange vessel was flying French colours and he gives a full description of what he calls a French Privateer. A full account is given of the manoeuvering of each vessel until eventually The Hope of Bridlington managed escape and to get to Bridlington Harbour.

William Robinson the other deponent, records that he was at Flamboro when a fisherman told him they had been approached when at sea off Flamboro Head by a vessel they believed to be a French privateer. Again full details of the vessle and the encounter are given.
