Description

Folios 257-258: James Athol Wood, HMS Favorite, Carlisle Bay, Barbados. Reports that Lieutenant Birdwood of HMS Penelope arrived on t 26 December 1796, having been loaded with water HMS Penelope sailed on the 27 December 1796 for Cape Nicola Mole with despatches. I am informed by Captain John Hamstead of HMS Thorn that Admiral [Henry] Harvey was expected to sail a few days ago from Martinique with 5 Sail of the Line as he had not heard of Bechenys? arrival at Rock Fort, he will acquaint the Admiral with Lieutenant Birdwood's account thereof. The Spaniards have 4 Sail of the Line at Trinidad and there is some apprehension for Tobago. He reports this as there has been no Packet from England since the 15 October last.
