Description

Folios 170-171: Robert Winthrop, HMS Albacore, Funchal Bay, Madeira. Reporting information received from an American vessel which fell in with a Dutch Squadron of 4 Sail of the Line, three Frigates and a 20 Gun Ship on 9 April 1796 who told him they were bound to India and were tom tae on water in Teneriffe. Reports he has written to the Commanding Officer at the Cape of Good Hope and likewise to the Governor of India. He will sail to join Admiral Hugh Cloberry Christian in the West Indies t advise him of the same. Captain Tennant of the Cronbourg, Danish East Indiaman bound to Madras is to take charge of my letters and have told him he would be rewarded. PS He wrote on the 14 April 1796 by way of Ireland, reporting his arrival, Lieutenant Mitchell of HMS Tourterelle takes charges of these letters, he goes to England by way of Lisbon in a very fast sailing American vessel having been left sick at this port.

Folios 172-173: enclosure with folios 170-171. Letter dated 18 April 1796 by Robert Winthrop, HMS Albacore, Funchal Bay, Madeira, to Captain Tennant [of the Cronbourg, Danish East Indiaman] stating he would be rewarded on his arrival at the Cape of Good Hope for carrying the letters.
