Description

Folios 255-256: Isaac Wolley, Regulating Captain, Lynn. Advising that the Town Clerk at Lynn, knows nothing of the Act requiring the examination and admeausurement of Lighters, Boats, Barges exceeding 13 tons on navigable rivers and inland navigations, and as a consequence no vessels have been registered. Advises the Navy Commissioners told him to apply to the Collector of Customs to find a person suitably qualified to carry out the surveys but none are available due to the amount of work involved, there being about 600 vessels that trade to the Port of Lynn. Notes that htere will be a probelm asmeasuring Lighters, if the common measure is used for all vessels, bacause of their flat bottoms which result in a heavier tonnage than they can actually carry. Acknowledges the Admiralty letter of 2 July 1795 that there is no objection to men being raised in the countryside surrounding Lynn provided it can be done at moderate expense. Awaiting the return of HMS Nancy from the Nore who will then be sent to Wells.

Folios 257-258: enclosure with folios 255-256. Letter dated 12 June 1795 by Isaac Wolley, Regulating Captain, Lynn, to the Admiralty. Advising that he has today taken charge as the Regulating Captain at Lynn in the room of Rear Admiral Isaac Prescott. Lieutenant J N Eastwood to remain at Lynn, under his command, until further orders. Acknowledges receipt of their letter of 9 June 1795 with the Order of Council for releasing the ships mentioned therein from the embargo.
