Folios 203-204: Thomas Wolley, HMS Active. Explains why so many men have deserted whilst the ship was in Portsmouth and describes how he subsequently received a letter from the men in which they claimed the First Lieutenant had been a tyrant and subjected them to cruel beatings. When challenged the Lieutenant had dismissed the allegations as being false and the work of some other ill intentioned person but other information leads him to requestthat Lieutenant [Maundril?] should be superseded and the allegations investigated. Expresses his uneasiness that following a letter from the Admiralty regarding the number of desertions, he should suffer in their opinion and feels he is not to blame other than being deceived by the Lieutenant. Adds that he has recently discovered that Lieutenant [Maundril?] was reprimanded abroad when he was a Petty Officer by a Court Martial for severe treatment of the men under him.
