Description

Folios 214-217. Folios 214-214: Letter from Lord Harcourt to Lord Weymouth enclosing a letter from Mr McCausland Collector of the port of Ballyraine [County Donegal] seeking directions as to how to act in relation to the upwards of 200 fishing vessels currently in Lough Swilly, many of them almost loaded, as the proclamation for laying on the embargo includes 'any article of provision'. If the fishing is in any way interrupted 'it will not only be the ruin of individuals but an irreparable loss to that part of the country at this time'. Harcourt therefore submits whether any tender on the impress service should be employed on that part of the coast but if it is absolutely necessary whether it should be under the same regulations as the impressing of seamen from the Scottish fisheries. Harcourt also asks whether the Commissioners of the Irish Revenue may be allowed to permit the sailing of those small vessels without interruption which he particularly asks for as he has been well informed that such vessels besides their loading of fish take only sufficient provisions necessary for their crews and that that part of the country does not provide any other provisions for export than fish. Dated at Dublin Castle. Enclosing: Folios 216-217: Letter dated at Letterkenny [County Donegal] from J McCausland to the Chief Commissioners of Revenue, Custom House, Dublin.
