Description

Folios 324-329. Letter from Lord Viscount Weymouth to the Earl of Buckingham enclosing extracts from a letter from Lausanne and a letter from Sir William Hamilton touching on the same subject. Dated at St James's. Enclosed: Folios 326-327: Extract from a letter dated at Whitehall on 8 July 1778 regarding intelligence received on 7 July 1778 from Sir Joseph Yorke [British diplomatic representative in Holland]. Folios 328-329: Extract from a letter dated at Lausanne on 17 June 1778 regarding reports from Rome of a plot for a revolt in the West of Ireland amongst the Roman Catholics with a view to overturn the present government by the aid of the French and Spaniards, and to establish such a one as prevails in the Cantons [of Switzerland], by granting toleration to the Protestants. It is hoped that the acts recently passed for the relief of the Roman Catholics will prevent the plot from succeeding, 'the notices to revolt having proceeded from the intolerable hardships they suffered'.
