Description

Folios 233-234. Letter from the Earl of Buckingham to Lord Viscount Weymouth regarding the detention of three French fishing vessels from Dieppe: two at Kinsale of about 50 tons and each navigated by 24 men and boys; one at Crookhaven, the crew consisting of master, 24 men and 4 boys, these men being in a starving condition, not having any provision but bread or any lading except salt. Buckingham directed a strict enquiry as to whether they had been regularly detained - if not they would be discharged, if so they would be detained and the respective crews subsisted at the rate of 6 pence per day for each man or boy until the King's pleasure as to the disposition to be made of them is signified. It having now been established that they were regularly detained, Buckingham seeks directions as to the King's pleasure regarding the confinement and subsistence of these men and any others that may similarly be taken in future. Dated at Dublin Castle.
