Folios 250-251: James Hawkins Whitshed, HMS Arrogant, Torbay. Parted company, by signals, from Admiral the Earl of Howe at noon on 20 September. At 10pm on night of 19th September a lower deck gun went off, believed to be due to the friction of the shot in the gun from the violent motion of the ship. Lower deck gun port was blown off and as on lee side large amount of water taken in until ship could go on to other tack. Due to heavy gale, the fleet being under storm staysails, took some time. Fortunately no one seriously hurt. It was impossible to repair damage at sea so went into Torbay. As soon as repaired will join the fleet.
