Description

Folios 289-290: Francis Wooldridge, HMS Fortune, Plymouth Sound. Reports his arrival yesterday evening from Portendie on the Coast of Africa which he was forced to leave for want of provisions. Gives details of how he executed his orders to take under convoy to Africa, the Reward, the New Providence and the Friends, sailing from the Nore on 17 April 1793, arriving in Guernsey on 23 April , and then after taking in provisions for four months in Plymouth, arrived in Portendie on 3 June 1793. Describes how he cruised the coast visiting Cape de Nerd, Cape Blanco down to Cape Merrick before returning to Portendie to remain with the Trade ships now joined by the Hanbury from London. Advises that he was visited on board twice by the King who by the informed him that the English Merchants would not pay the usual customs although the Masters of said vessels had advised him that the fees were exorbitant. He remained with the Trade until only 32 days supplies were left and not being able to replenish the ships stores through the Trade ships, sailed from England on 24 July. The ship also requires new cables and sails and the bottom needs repairing after hitting a bank off the coast of Africa.

Folio 291: enclosure with folios 289-290. Francis Wooldridge, HMS Fortune, Plymouth Sound, 31 August 1793. Report on the State and Condition of HMS Fortune.

Folios 292-293: enclosure with folios 289-290. Edward Hicks, J Carding and B Woolsey Muirson, Masters of Merchant Ships, the New Providence, Portendie, Africa, 22 July 1792 to Francis Wooldridge, HMS Fortune. Responding to his letter, express their distress at the situation HMS Fortune finds herself in, especially as it is out of their power to supply her with enough provisions she needs to remain at Portendie as they fear that their trade may be further"procrastinated". Thanks him for his offer of taking their letter to England. Lists the provisions that the Reward, the New Providence and the Hanbury have been able to give to HMS Fortuna.
