Description

Folios 87-88: James Wallis, Rochester. Refers to a deposition made by Mr Monk, the overseer of the poor for Appledore. Wallis commends that magistrates, mayor and Mr Thompson, all of Rochester, for their diligence. At a meeting of the magistrates at Maidstone it was decided that men should be brought to Captain Wallis, then returned to their villages before being brought again to Captain Wallis to be sent on board ship. Denies ever asking for a fee to be paid.

Folios 89-90: enclosed with folios 87-88. Signed by George Monk and witnessed by William Geary, Thomas Adams and J Andrews a sworn deposition about the enrolling of a raised man under a new Act of Parliament and stating that a fee was demanded by the clerk of the Regulating Officer and another by Mr Manclark, Mayer of Rochester. Mr A Thompson, a magistrate was present at the meeting.

Folios 91-92: enclosed with folios 87-88. A letter dated 14 April 1795 by signed by Arthur Manclark, Rochester, and A Thompson denying that the charges described in the deposition at folios 89-90 were for the benefit of officials and explaining the expenses incurred.

Folio 93: enclosed with folios 87-88. A handwritten note from the Admiralty stating that Captain Wallis should complement the magistrates on their public service and that those who signed the deposition be told that it is hoped that they are satisfied with the conduct of the Regulating Officer.
