Description

Folios 204-205: John Williams. Reporting his arrival back in town following the Order calling home all Officers absent on leave. Requests the command of any ship and asks whether the writer of the enclosed letter can be appointed as his Boatswain as he has sailed with him before.

Folios 206-207: enclosure with folios 204-205. Letter dated 22 July 1793 by William Boyle, [Spithead], to John Williams, St James Square, London. Explaining he has arrived back that day at Spithead in HMS Trusty, John Laforey, Rear Admiral, from Antigua on which he has been Acting Boatswain since 3 January 1793, having previously served on HMS Blanche, Christopher Parker, Captain. Gives details of events in the Windward Islands, namely the withdrawal of forces from Martinique by Rear Admiral Alan Gardner, the attack on Tobago and describes how the Pilgrim, Leater and Mack of Liverpool brought into Barbados a large French ship of great value from the South Seas, while the Clarendon of London called into Antigua with a Prize. The Privateers had also stopped many American ships and taken their cargoes if condemned. Mr William Blith [Bligh] is at Antigua with the Bread Fruit plants but had not seen him.
