Description

Folios 196-197: Thomas Williams, HMS Lizard, the Nore. Reporting his arrival at the Nore this day having seen home, with HMS Racehorse, the British convoy from Elsinore. On 18 September 1793 instructs James Lecky, Captain, to separate with part of the convoy bound for Newcastle and the northern Ports and then on his return to the Nore offer protection to such Trade ships bound for Southampton. Reports Captain Lecky rejoined him at Cromer. Part of the Convoy also separated off the coast of Norway due to bad weather so Robert Faulknor, Captain, HMS Zebra was directed to cruise the coast for seven days to give protection or until the winds changed. Explains that he would not be doing his duty if he did not inform the Admiralty of the misbehaviour of many of the Merchant Ships under his convoy, disobeying signals and orders and intentionally separating themselves from the rest of the fleet. If any of these ships were captured, he believes he can offer justice to the Underwriters, so"infamously defrauded", by the evidence he can give regarding their behaviour. Requires direction on what to do with the two guineas he made the Masters pay to the Gunners of HMS Lizard for shots fired at them.
