Description

Folios 277-278: James Hanway Plumridge, late Commander HMS Sappho, 19 Nottingham Place. Acknowledgement receipt of letter dated 3rd inst, and of papers relating to Commander of HMS Nepean claiming share of smugglers vessel Maria captured by the Sappho, and contrary to the duty to officers and men aboard her, and their entitlement to the Prize Money. States that Affadavit from Mr Morris was different to statement given by him aboard Sappho.

Folios 279: enclosure with folios 277-278. Extract of HMS Sappho's Log, 12 Oct 1820.

Folios 280: enclosure with folios 277-278. Copy of letter to Mr A Morris, Commanding HMS Nepean, from Captain James Hanway Plumridge, HMS Sappho, and dated 6 Oct 1820 relating to him still being in port according to Report from Collector at Westport, received by Collector of Taxes in Dublin, which required an explanation.

Folios 281-282: enclosure with folios 277-278. Extract of Orders from Commander James Hanway Plumridge, HMS Sappho, to Mr A Morris, HM Revenue Cruiser Nepean.

Folios 283: enclosure with folios 277-278. Copy of letter to Sir Josias Rowley, Bart, KCB, Commander-in-Chief, from Commander James Hanway Plumridge, HMS Sappho, dated 11 Oct 1820.

Folios 284-285: Statement from Ordinary Seaman James Abercrombie, HMS Sappho, dated 6 Mar 1821, regarding sighting the schooner Maria, caught smuggling Tobacco from New York, 12 Oct 1820, with no other vessel in sight.

Folios 286-287: enclosure with folios 277-278. Statement from Midshipman Henry Thomas Harris, HMS Sappho, dated 7 Mar 1821, regarding the boarding of the schooner Maria by Lieutenant Ward, 12 Oct 1820, while on the Main Top Mast Head, and saw no other vessel in sight, except one at a great distance.

Folios 288-289: enclosure with folios 277-278. Statements from Captain's Clerk John Bulman and Carpenter's Yeoman William Clarke, both aboard HMS Sappho and both dated 7 Mar 1821, regarding the capture of the schooner Maria on 12 Oct 1820, and neither saw any other vessel in sight from their positions.
