Description

Folios 224-225: Francis Stanfell, HMS Cossack, Falmouth Harbour. Writes regarding the freight of $50,000 embarked at Cadiz when he commanded HMS Druid. On arriving at Alicante he informed he informed Admiral Sir Benjamin Hallowell of the money to be delivered to the Consul and was advised that it would be unsafe to send it ashore given that the French were in the area. He was ordered instead to send the money aboard the flagship HMS Malta. A receipt is enclosed.

Folio 226: enclosed with folios 224-225. Signed by Lieutenant Edward Boxer in the absence of Captain Samuel Hood Inglefield a receipt for 17 cases of dollars in numbered boxes.

Folio 227: enclosed with folios 224-225. Letter dated 4 January 1813 by Francis Stanfell, HMS Cossack, Gibraltar, writes to Rear Admiral Hallowell that if any mistake was made in the transactions with the dollars it was the fault of Mr Athy.

Folio 228: enclosed with fgolios 224-225. Letter dated 20 November 1812 by Rear Admiral Hallowell, HMS Malta, Alicante, writes to Captain Stanfell about the transactions made with Mr Athy. He quotes instructions about the correct method of payment of public money.
