Description

Folios 87-88: Sandford Tatham, Greenock. Encloses a letter from Boyd Alexander, Lieutenant Colonel, and explains the case and circumstances of Robert Cunningham, aged about 24, a Jobber or Rigger at Port Glasgow. Cunningham was impressed by Robert Morris, Lieutenant, out of the Eglinton from the West Indies at the Road of Greenock having been sent down the Clyde from Glasgow to replace seamen who were sent on shore to avoid impressment. Having originally felt that Cunningham came under the Press Warrant, he finds, under further investigation, that Cunningham does fall under Statute Exemptions and released him on 29 September 1806 which left Lieutenant-Colonel John Dunlop no time to inform Lieutenant-Colonel-Commandant Boyd Alexander.

Folios 89-90: enclosure with folios 87-88. Letter dated 30 September 1806 by Boyd Alexander, Lieutenant-Colonel-Commandant, Greenock and Port Glasgow Regiment of Volunteer Infantry, South Bar, Ayrshire, to the Admiralty. Requests the discharge of Robert Cunningham, a Jobber at Glasgow Docks and a Volunteer in the Corps who has been wrongly impressed and detained by Sandford Tatham under new directions form the Admiralty. Expalins that Cunningham, together with two thirds of the Corps, is not a seaman and if they are now liable for impressment, the ranks of the Corps will thin.
