Folios 563-564: John Tower, HMS Lark. He is very unhappy with the account that appeared in the TImes [copy enclosed] of the incident when La Marianne was captured after a prolonged battle with two English privateers sailing under Letters of Marque. The Court accepted that a man was killed during the action but Tower says he has letters he exchanged with the French captain showing the man was just shot and not killed during the action. He feels his character has been impugned.
Folio 565: enclosure with folios 563-564. Extract from the Times October 1803. Report of the proceedings of the High Court of Admiralty in the matter of La Marianne. States that Captain Tower revoked the Letters of Marque granted to Captain Thompson because he killed a man on board La Marianne after she had struck her colours. The Court found against Captain Tower.
