Description

Folios 211-212: Sandford Tatham, Greenock. Is forwarding letters concerning William Quince who came to Greenock on the Ulysses of Greenock from Wilmington, Carolina and has been impressed. There is a claim he is an American citizen.

Folios 213-214: enclosure with folios 211-212. Letter dated 16 November 1803 by John J. Murray, American Consulate, City of Glasgow. Demands that William Quince, a yellow man and American by birth who has been impressed be released. encloses the Protection which he himself had given Quince.

Folio 215: enclosure with folios 211-212. Protection certificate issued on 7 September 1803 by the American Consul in Glasgow. Certifies that William Quince, an American seaman was born in America and is an American citizen.

Folios 216-217: enclosure with folios 211-212. Letter dated 19 November 1803 by Sandford Tatham, Greenock. Informs Captain Simpson of HMS Tourerelle that he is satisfied that Quince is an American citizen and that he should be released.

Folio 218: enclosure with folios 211-212. Letter dated 20 November 1803 by Captain Simpson, HMS Tourterelle, Greenock. Regrets to inform him he will not release Quince and wishes similar cases referred directly to him in the future.
