Folios 448-449: Sir Thomas Trowbridge, HMS Ville de Paris, Torbay. Ask for the enclosed papers to be laid before the King's Advocate which will show that the Swedish owner of the Caroline was employed to transport part of the enemy's army from Civitavecchia to Egypt in an unlawful act and thus put a stop to any lawsuit. Explains how he had stopped the Caroline along with other neutrals coming out of Alexandria Harbour and had intended to use them as Fire ships to destroy the enemy's convoys and Men of War in Alexandria Port but that his plans were thwarted by severe gales which had blown the ships off anchor and wrecked them. The ships were not stopped for selfish gain for they were to be burnt for the good of the Navy. Hopes that the usual protests of the Masters of Merchant ships are not given any weight for had it not been for them aiding the enemy, he feels Bonaparte would not have half the force he has now. Suggests that the owners of the Caroline should be asking the French Government for redress as the ships are at the moment French property, and that it appears all the Masters received money from the enemy for fitting out their ships who they will continue to carry on helping, however unlawful as they can always claim they were forced to help and thereby escape punishment. Asks for the Admiralty to support him as he has always sacrificed his private interest to the public good and had it not been for the gale he has little doubt he would have destroyed every ship in the harbour. Captains Hood and Miller also mentioned.
Folio 450: enclosure with folios 448-449. Account of Swedish and French papers found onboard the Caroline.
