Description

Folios 444-445: Sir Thomas Troubridge, HMS Ville de Paris, off Ushant. Acknowledges receipt from HMS Brilliant of letter dated 8 September 1800 enclosing a letter from the Swedish Minister about the loss of the ship Caroline which he had stopped and responds to the direction to state what happened. Explains that the ship was one of several transport ships employed by the enemy to take the French Army to Egypt. The Master had a strong letter of recommendation for his diligent and attentive service to the enemy which was sealed with his papers and bills. Believes neutral vessels acting as transport for the enemy to be lawful Prize and therefore detained them with a view to prosecution through the Admiralty Courts. When the Caroline was stopped off Alexandria, the winter gales blew her off anchor and wrecked her on shore with many others. He has always felt it his duty to annoy and distress everyone who adheres or gives the slightest assistance to the enemy which was his main reason for keeping the bills claimed by Swedish owner for helping the enemy, and were not for his own use. States that the innocent Neutral owner was not employed in lawful trade as claimed in the letter and statement of the Swedish Merchant enclosed in Baron Silverjelm letter and that this satisfactorily explains that the owner had forfeited everything by the Law of Nations.
