Description

Folios 282-283A: Andrew Todd, HMS Trusty off the Isle of Wight. Reports that he sailed from the Cape of Good Hope by order of Sir John Christian to St Helena and take ships of the East India Company to England. Once there he waited for HMS Chichester and for vessels to join the convoy from the Cape and for the fleet from China. They sailed on 12 August. Encloses intelligence from Edward Phipps, late Mate of HMS Triumph and now on board HMS Caroline, who escaped from prison in Lima. This intelligence concerns Spanish ships on the coast of Peru and Chile with a list of English ships they captured. Reports on 2 captured Danish ships, the Nancy and the Odin, their cargoes and voyages. Odin is under the orders of Captain Elmore who captained her when she was under English colours but now claims to be the pilot while Captain Hals is the pretend captain and they are working in concert with the Dutch. The Oldenborg under Captain Lydzov arrived to collect a convoy of Danish ships Odin, Nancy and Rendsborg but was shown the contraband by Governor Brooke.

Folios 284-285: enclosed with folios 283-284. A list of 13 vessels, masters, owners, crew numbers, cargo etc boarded at sea by HMS Trusty under Captain Todd between 7 July and 17 October: Louisa, Mary, Nimble, Rambler, Nancy, Robie & Betsy, Philadelphia, Kingston, Ranger, Sally, Flora, Jupiter and Joseph & Francis.

Folios 286-287: enclosed with folios 282-283. A list of 10 English ships captured at sea by the Spaniards between 1 February and 2 May received from Edward Phipps, late Mate of the ship Triumph under Thomas Anderson, Master: Lydia, Betsy, Levant, Charmoelea, Beaver, Alderney, Jupiter, Atlantic, Commerce and Triumph. Phipps also describes the boats belonging to the Spanish king including the Peruano.
