Captured ship: St Anthony of Padua of Ostend (master Jacob Morales of Mechelen) .
Capture history: a Flemish (Spanish Netherlands) merchant ship (snow or frigate, 23-30 tons/18 lasts, no guns or powder borne, but ports had been cut for 8 guns, 5 men, built 3-4 months before at Ostend on contract, August 1672, 53 [Amsterdam] feet long, for the Amsterdam merchant Wouter de Vries, but bought by owners on 10 February 1673, whilst the ship was still on the stocks), now bound from Corunna to London, laden with 100,000 oranges and 80,000 lemons (now rotten), and 200 pieces of eight, and 50-60 great shot used as ballast; she was forced into Plymouth by bad weather and contrary winds on 9/19 May 1673, and there seized. Two former Dutch privateersmen in the crew alleged that the ship was built as a privateer for Flushing merchants and was intended to be sold for that purpose to the Dutch at Corunna. They alleged also that the master had instructions to that effect and that the ship was called Katienbaw by the master and crew.
Owners: Anthoine Domicent (otherwise Anthony Domiscent), Thomas Hamilton (otherwise Hambleton), Boudewijn Borm (otherwise Boudien van Bourne). Also alleged to be Phiole, the Treasurer of Ostend, and others. [See HCA 24/147/1 for the owners' allegation and claim, 6 Auigust 1673].
Court Papers numbered CP 1-13:-
Ships papers, numbered SP 4- SP 26; ship's pass, bills of lading, letters (the numbering used is on front top right: 1-3 are wanting). [HCA 30/882, p. 61: notes that 25 papers were received 4 June 1673].
There had been mail in transit on board, of which most was delivered to John Hall, Marshal of the Admiralty of Devon, but three letters were delivered, sealed, to William Martyn merchant to be sent overland, of which two were delivered back to Hall, and also the pieces of eight.
