Description

Captured ship: St Anthony of Lubeck (master Peter Knack of Lubeck, otherwise Peter Knake)

Capture history: a Lubeck merchant ship (280-300 tons/150 lasts), bound from Lisbon to Hamburg, laden with sugar, salt, Brazil tobacco, sweetmeats, oil, Campeche wood and other goods; taken on 20/30 April 1673 off Dodman Point or the Lizard by HMS Portsmouth (James Paget commanding), and brought into Plymouth. (The ship was built at Lubeck for the owners 6 months before, and was sailing in company from Lisbon with Hamburg ships from Lisbon and Malaga).

Owners: Barent Drayer, Anthony Brandes, France Jenky, Arnoldus Isselhoff, Didrick Bartels, Nickolas Browninck, John Iserenhagen, John Lawe and Peter Knack, all residents of Lubeck.

Court Papers numbered CP 1-9:-

  • [CP 1-CP 2]: standing interrogatories and four examinations, 21 April 1673;
  • [CP 3-CP 4]: standing interrogatories and two examinations, 8 May 1673;
  • [CP 5]: affidavit by John King and John Bannicke, prize waiters at Plymouth, that Hendrick Mirson, navigator of Salvador of Lubeck, and Hans Weverson, boatswain of St Anthony, declared that the ships were not of Lubeck, but Dutch, and made rude comments about Captain Reade of HMS Morning Star, who had taken Salvador of Lubeck, 19 May 1673;
  • [CP 6-CP 7]: 2 lists of claims from Lubeck, Lisbon and Hamburg, referring to St Anthony of Lubeck;
  • [CP 8]: claim from Lubeck referring to Salvador of Lubeck (master Hendrick Bencke, otherwise Henry Boeke), 80 lasts.
  • [CP 9]: certificate of the Court that these two ships were included in the list of Lubeck ships in the Registry Office of the Lords Commissioners for Prizes.
