Description

Folios 377-378: William Truscott, HMS Ganges, Cove of Cork.

Advises that on 29 September, in fog, he had parted company with Vice Admiral Kingsmill in the latitude where they had been cruising since leaving Plymouth. He waited a day, then headed for the rendezvous they had arranged, off Cape Clear, but not finding him after two days proceeded to this anchorage. Many orders were waiting there for Kingsmill, so having consulted Captains Faulkner and Harvey, who were lying there, he opened the two last. The first enclosed a letter from Vice Admiral Cosby, returning with the trade from the Mediterranean - Truscott has therefore ordered the frigates Diana and Santa Margarita to Cape Clear, to wait for 15 days in hope of meeting them, but if not to return for further orders. The second order contained instructions for the Ganges and Montagu to join Admiral Sir John Jervis in the West Indies - has therefore given orders to the purser to go to Cork, to find provisions for the voyage, also the storekeeper at Kinsale to bring lists of stores available. Says the rigging is very worn after all the hard weather. Assures them of his expedition and says as soon as Admiral Kingsmill arrives with the Montagu they will proceed for Carlisle Bay as directed. Admiralty note on rear says he is to put to sea to join Admiral Jervis immediately, without waiting for the Montagu or completing his stores and provisions, as they will be available at the West Indies.
