In 2014, a cross-party Prime Minister's Holocaust Commission was formed with the task of establishing what more Britain must do to ensure that the memory of the Holocaust is preserved and that the lessons it teaches are never forgotten. Following the publication of the Commission's report, 'Britain?s Promise to Remember', in January 2015, the UK Holocaust Memorial Foundation (UKHMF) was established as an advisory committee of the Department for Communities and Local Government.
The UKHMF advises HM Government on taking forward the Commission's key recommendations. The recommendations are to deliver: a National Memorial to the Holocaust to be established in a prominent central London location; a world-class Learning Centre, co-located with the Memorial, using cutting-edge technologies to enhance visitors' learning; and an urgent programme to record and preserve the testimony of British Holocaust survivors and concentration camp liberators. Between 2015 and 2016, the UKHMF took forward the final recommendation by recording 112 audio-visual interviews with 113 people. Natasha Kaplinsky, broadcaster and member of the UKHMF Board, conducted all 112 interviews, and in 2017 was recognised for her extraordinary voluntary contribution with an OBE for services to Holocaust Commemoration.
