Description

Folios 407-408: James Slade, HMS Experiment, Falmouth. Regarding William Roberts, sent to HMS Alphea, and Benjamin Wynn, on board HMS Experiment, after their impressment from Mr Mayne's employment. Both deserted and William Roberts was re-employed by Mr Mayne. Detail regarding Mr Mayne including the renting of Oyster Banks at Helford. Suggesting the enclosed cases could be used as examples to discourage men from desertion.

Folios 409-410: enclosure with folios 407-408. Letter dated 16 August 1813 by James Slade, HMS Experiment, Falmouth, to the Admiralty. Regarding John Griffies, impressed from the Factor from Bermuda has admitted being Robert Jones, a deserter from HMS Dragon. While at Bermuda, he was encouraged and bribed to desert by Mr Frazor, master of the Sally, a Droit to the Crown, for the trip to London.

Folios 411-412: enclosure with folios 407-408. John Griffies, to James Slade, HMS Experiment, Falmouth. Admitting his desertion from HMS Dragon in the name of Robert Jones and the effect of this on his health. Requesting his pardon and to avoid his return to HMS Dragon.

Folios 413-414: enclosure with folios 407-408. Letter dated 21 August 1813 by Mary and Honor Traleggen of Lower [Cummunjee?], Falmouth, to James Slade, HMS Experiment, Falmouth. Declaration to Lieutenant Knight and Mr Hoggert that William Roberts, who deserted from HM Schooner Alphea, was working for Mr Mayne at [Cummunjee?] until the gang went to Durgan for a deserter Robert Williams, threatening his employer, John Hill, with prosecution if he continued to harbour him. Lieutenant Hortright, Peter Rowe and William Hawe (or Owl) also mentioned.

Folio 415: Enclosure with folios 407-408. Admiralty Record Office Document Request Slip, Regarding letter from James Slade, Falmouth, 16 Aug 1813, to the Admiralty. Regarding John Griffies, alias Robert Jones, confessing to desertion from HMS Dragon after inticement by Mr Frazor of the Sally. 19 Aug 1813, Mr Bicknell to prosecute Mr Frazor.
