Description

Folios 382-383: Peter Spicer, Swansea. Regarding the United States Brig Argus reported in the Bristol Channel and that copies of the attached Affidavit have also been sent to the Admirals Commanders of Plymouth and Cork. Folio 383 is the Affidavit, by William [Trewhellar?] of St Ives, Master of the Sloop John and Thomas from [Pool?], reporting on the American Warship Argus and it's accompanying pilot boat who had ordered him to show his papers and that the John and Thomas be burnt. Also reporting that the Argus took two West Indiamen from Bristol, the Betsy was sent to France and the Mariner was burnt. The Brig Elenor, travelling from [Pool?] to Liverpool, was also taken and being used to carry prisoners to [Bristol?] as a Cartel. William [Trewhellar?] has now landed at Swansea. Document sworn before Charles Collins, Portreave [Portreeve?] of Swansea, at Swansea on 13 Aug 1813.

Folios 384-385: enclosure with folios 382-383. Letter dated 12 August 1813 by John Hopkins, Commander of the Speedwell Cutter, Mumble Road, to Captain Spicer. In view of the above offences reported by the United States Brig of War Argus when West of Lundy, he is proceeding to [Ilfracombe?] to dispatch the Commander in Chief at Plymouth and warn Trade.
