Ravenser Odd was a short-lived island in the mouth of the River Humber. It rose from the sea in the early 13th century and had sunk beneath the waves by 1360.

The British Transport Commission accumulated these nine series of maps and plans among the British Transport Historical Records, under the references MPS 1 - MPS 8 and MPS(Y). The Public Record Office assumed responsibility for the British Transport Historical Records in 1972, and created the RAIL department to designate them. RAIL series were created to contain the maps and plans: MPS 1 - MPS 8 were allocated to RAIL 1029 - RAIL 1036 respectively; MPS (Y) to RAIL 1037. However, the transfer of the maps and plans into these series did not take place until the 1990s. All documents formerly requisitioned under MPS or MPS (Y) references now bear RAIL references, by which they should be ordered.
