The post of inspector general was created in August 1918 to look into matters which, in the opinion of the Air Council, required investigation. Although no formal terms of reference were ever issued, his normal duties were to inspect units and formations of the Royal Air Force and Women's Royal Air Force at home and abroad and to report to the Air Council upon their training and efficiency. In so far as the Inspector General was answerable to anyone, it was to the Chief of the Air staff. The Inspector General was usually an air marshal or air chief marshal on his last tour. The post was abolished in January 1969.
