Folios 126-129. Letter from the Lord Viscount Weymouth to 1st Earl Harcourt referring to an account given by the King's Consul at Gothenburg of a large American built brigantine that had taken on board at an out harbour on that [Swedish] coast a parcel of teas packed first into barrels and then put into tar barrels, with which it is thought she was to proceed to the 'West Coast' of Ireland [and then], to Newry, to Dundalk or to Belfast. Harcourt is requested to take appropriate measures to either prevent the teas from being landed in Ireland or the vessel's proceeding to North America with prohibited effects (whether tea or gunpowder). Dated at St James's. Enclosed: Folios 128-129: Extract of a letter from Thomas Erskine Esquire, His Majesty's Consul at Gothenburg dated 11 May 1776 to the Earl of Suffolk. Details the above, adding that the vessel has come from the Baltic, and its master calls himself Hugh Jones (suspected to be a fictitious name).
