Description

Captured ship: Success of Wisbech (master John Greenwood).

History: an English merchant ship (pink, 55-60 tons) bound from Haymouth to Ostend or Bruges, laden with wheat; taken on 8/18 June 1694 off Lowestoff by HMS Sheerness Galley(James Launce commanding), and brought into Great Yarmouth.

Court Papers numbered CP 1-CP 25:

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: interrogatories, four examinations, two attestations by prize commissioners;
  • [CP 5a-CP 5b]: claim to the ship and cargo on behalf of merchants in Wisbech and Bruges, attestation as to the ship's current and past voyages;
  • [CP 6-CP 7]: attestation in French sent from Dunkirk, translation of a Dutch attestation [original not here];
  • [CP 8-CP 9]: two sets of claims to the ship by English merchants;
  • [CP 10]: certificate regarding the ship's past and current voyages;
  • [CP 11]: affidavit stating that the cargo of wheat was sold at Great Yarmouth;
  • [CP 12]: allegation;
  • [CP 13-CP 21]: legal proceedings taken on commission at King's Lynn, examinations, interrogatories, proxy, allegation, commision, bills of sale for the cargo, docket;
  • [CP 22-CP 25]: receipt, two appraisements, commission of appraisement.

Ship’s Papers numbered SP 1-SP 3, ship's passes, bill of lading.
