Captured ship: Speedwell of Bideford (master Phillip Upcot).
History: an Irish (Jacobite) merchant ship (50 tons) bound from Waterford to Brest, laden with cod and train oil; taken on 17/27 December 1689 off the Scilly Isles by HMS St Albans (John Layton commanding), and brought into Plymouth; it was previously an English fishing ship, which was captured by the French Privateer Messenain November 1689 and carried into Waterford.
