Description

Captured ship: Speedwell of Bideford (master Phillip Upcot).

History: an Irish (Jacobite) merchant ship (50 tons) bound from Waterford to Brest, laden with cod and train oil; taken on 17/27 December 1689 off the Scilly Isles by HMS St Albans (John Layton commanding), and brought into Plymouth; it was previously an English fishing ship, which was captured by the French Privateer Messenain November 1689 and carried into Waterford.

Court Papers numbered CP 1-CP 8:

  • [CP 1-CP 2]: interrogatories, two examinations;
  • [CP 3]: claim to the ship and cargo on behalf of merchants in Bideford;
  • [CP 4-CP 6]: three attestations relating to the ship's construction and its past voyage to Newfoundland;
  • [CP 7-CP 8]: inventory, commission of appraisement.

[Decision: ship and cargo restored, paying salvage 27 January 1690].
