Description

Captured ship: Speedwell (master John Keating).

History: an English merchant ship (hoy) bound from Middelburg to Bristol, laden with iron pots, madder, blacking, and deal boards; first taken on 17/27 July 1692 between Milford Haven and Waterford by the Irish Jacobite privateer Providence (Patrick Lambert commanding) and then retaken on 21/31 July 1692 off Lands End by Henry Jones, Vice Admiral of North Cornwall, using two fishing boats manned by his bother and eighteen men, and brought into Penzance.

Court Papers numbered CP 1-CP 9:

  • [CP 1-CP 3]: interrogatories, two examinations;
  • [CP 4]: claim to the ship and cargo on behalf of English merchants;
  • [CP 5-CP 6]: inventory, commission of appraisement;
  • [CP 7-CP 9]: three certificates stating irregularities and charges incurred in the appriasement of the ship at Penzance, with a letter from Abraham Lawton on the same subject.

[Decision: ship and cargo restored, paying salvage 8 September 1692].
