Administrative / biographical background

The Command grew out of the Coastal Area which was responsible for the Fleet Air Arm and certain RAF units on the coasts of Great Britain. It was renamed Coastal Command on 14 July 1936. In July 1937 responsibility for the Fleet Air Arm was transferred to the Admiralty. During the Second World War Coastal Command undertook anti-U Boat operations, long range maritime reconnaissance and air/sea rescue searches. Aircraft of the Command also took place in offensive anti-shipping strikes and attacks on enemy shore installations. After the War Coastal Command shared with Royal Navy responsibility for the control of sea communications and included in its tasks reconnaissance and surveillance, anti-submarine operations and meteorological flights. Coastal Command was absorbed into Strike Command on 28 November 1969.
