Folios 524-525: James Slade, HMS Experiment, Falmouth. States the case of William Bishop, a Boy, who volunteered along with another Boy, to join the Service on 10 August 1812 claiming to be 13 or 14 years old. His mother and father came on board a few day later stating he was only eleven and when he, Slade, refused to give William Bishop up, agreed the boy could stay as long as he remained on HMS Experiment. Says William Bishop is a very fine Boy and keen to go to sea.
Folios 526-527: enclosure with folios 524-525. Letter dated 19 August 1812 by Edward Hodge, Mayor, Penryn, to the Admiralty. Applies for the release of William Bishop who he says was tricked by a crafty person, and without the knowledge of his parents, to enlist in the Navy Service at Falmouth. Explains that his parents requested his release due to his age but was refused by James Slade, who advised them only the Admiralty could grant this.
