Description

Folios 487-488: James Slade, Regulating Officer, HMS Experiment, Falmouth. Comments, as requested, on the enclosed petition of John Pearce [Pearse], saying he hopes the Admiralty will allow the prosecution against John Pearce [Pearse] and William Owld, as the assault was unprovoked and part of the manifest hostilities against those in the Impress Service at Falmouth as well as being great encouragement to deserters from the Navy. If found guilty he asks that the punishment, if reduced due to mitigating circumstances, will have the desired effect of preventing any repetition of the attacks on those employed in the Impress Service. Disagrees with the assertion in the Petition that John Pearce [Pearse] is a quiet character.

Folios 489-490: enclosure with folios 487-488. Petition from John Pearse, Falmouth 2 August 1812, to the Admiralty. Argues that he is poor labourer with a wife and child and describes a"misunderstanding" which took place a few weeks earlier with the Gang impressing Local Militia, to which he belongs. Mentions an incident between Ward of the Impress Service and William Owld and in which he intervened. Pleas that, as he cannot pay anything nor defend himself legally and is of quiet character, they do not indict him.
