Description

Folios 469-470: Andrew Smith, Greenock. Encloses information from the Master of the Pomona.

Folios 471-472: enclosure with folios 469-470. Letter dated 20 August 1812 by James McNaught, Master, the Pomona of Glasgow, Greenock. Reports his arrival at Greenock that day and states that he was boarded by HMS Hazard in soundings on the banks of Newfoundland on 26 July 1812. The officers of HMS Hazard had informed him that they had retaken a brig belonging to Guernsey which had been captured by an American squadron of four or five ships a short time before. The squadron had taken and burned several other ships but the Guernsey brig had been sent to America as a Privateer before HMS Hazard caught up with her. Reports that the Americans may have shaped a course for the English coast but only an opinion as the the Americans onboard refused to give any information regarding the Squadron.
