Folios 440-441: James Slade, HMS Experiment, Falmouth. Acknowledges Admiralty letter containing a petition from John Pearce. Reports that when impressing local Militiamen, the inhabitants of Falmouth have shown hostility towards the Impress Gang who took refuge on HMS Experiment and remained there for several days. He has asked the Mayor to take such steps as to preserve the public peace but reports that the Midshipman of the Gang and William Ward were assaulted by John Pearce and William Owld. Believes the attack not only to be premeditated but intended to aim"a deadly blow" at the Impress Service as Pearce has subsequently said that he thought the town's people would have supported him. Says he is justified in saying from the hostility displayed in Falmouth to the Impress Service that the Mayor, had the assault not been entirely proven, may not have committed the Petitioner nor the Grand Jury of Falmouth found against him.
