Description

Folios 383-384: James Slade, Regulating Officer, HMS Experiment, Falmouth. States the case of John Rowe, impressed by Lieutenant Christopher Kortwright on 24 July 1812 in a public house and with no documents on him to exempt him from an Impress Warrant. Disputes the details and claims made by Edward Lawrence, Captain of Rowe's ship, in the enclosed Petition of the circumstances of Rowe's impress and feels that if such excuses are admitted to procure a man's discharge, the Admiralty will be 'teezed' by similar Petitions by every man that is impressed in the area. Notes that Christopher Saverland, Agent for HM Packets has asked that he deems it essential for the good order of the Packer Establishment for all their seamen to be compelled to carry their Protection on them and that Saverland hopes that Rowe will not be discharged on the basis of the grounds in the Petition.

Folio 385: enclosure with folios 383-384. Petition dated 29 July 1812 by Sarah Row, mother of John Rowe, Falmouth. Details her reasons why her son, who has sailed with the vessel the Duke of Kent and her Captain Edward Lawrance for five years, should be discharged and that the reason he did not have his Protection on him was that he had returned home to change his wet clothes. Petition is certified as correct by Edward Lawrance, Captain of the Duke of Kent who claims that John Rowe was on duty at the time waiting with the boat for the Officer of the Watch.
