Description

Folios 368-369: James Keith Shepard, Regulating Officer, Gravesend. States the cases and gives brief descriptions of Johan Henrick Steffens and Lorens Pieterson. Johan Henrich Steffens was impressed on 26 July 1812 by Lieutenant Jordan from the Prince George off Gravesend, inward bound from Jamaica and has been sent to the Nore. Lorens Pieterson was impressed on 25 July 1812 by Lieutenant Jordan from the ship Lady Johnstone, off Gravesend, inward bound from Jamaica and is now on HMS Corso. Both men appear to be natives of the Northern States and have produced Protection Certificates signed by William Lagemann, Consul General and Commercial Agent of HSH the Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp Oldenburg.

Folios 370-371: enclosure with folios 368-369. Letter dated 2 August 1812 by John Plantholst, 75 Parson Street, Upper East Smithfield, London, to the Admiralty. Encloses letters from [Johan] Henrich Steffens and Lorens Pieterson, natives of Oldenburg who have been pressed and are now on board HMS Corso at Gravesend. Requests their release as they were returning from the West Indies in an English Merchant vessel and claim the reason they were pressed was that their Protections were issued by William Lagemann, the Consul in Oldenburg.

Folio 372: enclosure with folios 370-371. Protection for Johan Henrich Steffens, issued in London on 25 July 1810 and signed by William Lagemann, Consul General and Commercial Agent of HSH the Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp Oldenburg.

Folio 373: enclosure with folios 370-371. Protection for Lorens Pieterson, issued in London on 17 August 1810 and signed by William Lagemann, Consul General and Commercial Agent of HSH the Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp Oldenburg.

Folios 374-375: enclosures with folios 370-371. Letter dated 1 August 1812 by [Johan] Henrich Steffens, Gravesend, to John Plantholst, Upper East Smithfield, London. Letter is written in [West Low German?].

Folios 376-377: enclosures with folios 370-371. Letter dated 1 August 1812 by Lorens Pieterson, Gravesend, to John Plantholst, Upper East Smithfield, London. Letter is written in [West Low German?].
