Description

Folios 333-334: Peter Spicer, Regulating Officer, Swansea. Enclosing a letter receive from Lieutenant John Turner regarding the conduct of Charles Forth, Ordinary Seaman serving on HMS Enchantress at the Impress Station at Bristol. Reports that in a second enclosed letter from Lieutenant Turner regarding 5 men recently impressed: John Redmore, Able Seaman; Robert Heddon, Ordinary Seaman; Owen Havet, Able Seaman; Richard White, Ordinary Seaman and David Clement, Able seaman, he is informed that Masters of various vessels have forwarded a memorial to the Admiralty. Of the 5 men all of fir for service apart from David Clement who is too old and has been discharged. Captain John Philips, Regulating Officer at Bristol also mentioned.

Folio 335: enclosure with folios 333-334. List of five men John Redmore, Robert Heddon, Owen Havet, Richard White and David Clement, impressed by Lieutenant John Turner, Commander, HMS Ann in Swansea on 27 July 1812. Contains details of age, rating, years at sea and general remarks.

Folios 336-337: enclosure with folios 333-334. Letter dated 23 July 1812 by John Turner, Lieutenant, HMS Ann, Swansea, to Peter Spicer, Regulating Officer, Swansea. Informing of the mutinous conduct of Charles Forth, Ordinary Seaman belonging to HMS Enchantress at Bristol and currently confined on HMS Ann. Describes the events following several periods of absence without leave after Forth had joined HMS Ann on 8 April 1812 for a passage to Plymouth to be paid his bounty, including breaking free from confinement, drawing a sword and threatening to attack his fellow crew for which he received two dozen lashes. Reports that John Forth is Frenchborn, although claims to be a Hanoverian, and considers him to be most dangerous to be on board any naval vessel or at liberty on shore in England.

Folios 338-339: enclosure with folios 333-334. Letter dated 29 July 1812 by John Turner, Lieutenant, HMS Ann, Swansea, to Peter Spicer, Regulating Officer, Swansea. Regarding the impressment of John Redmore, Able Seaman; Robert Heddon, Ordinary Seaman; Owen Havet, Able Seaman; Richard White, Ordinary Seaman and David Clement, Able seaman on 27 July 1812 and asks if his letter of 23 July and the enclosed list can be forwarded to the Admiraltyfor information for when they receive the applications for the men's discharge from the Masters of their vessels.

Folios 340-341: enclosure with folios 333-334. Letter dated 26 July 1812 by John Philips, Regulating Officer, Bristol, to Peter Spicer, Regulating Officer, Swansea. Replying to a letter from Peter Spicer, saying he is at a loss of how to advise as the man has already been punished by Lieutenant John Turner and he does not think he can be tried by Court Martial. Says the man is not French as described by Lieutenant Turner but a German.
