Description

Folios 317-318: James Keith Shepard, Regulating Officer, Gravesend. Acknowledging receipt of applications and documents regarding James Boland, William Peat, Charles Ensor and James Hamilton alias James Burrows and states their case together with descriptions of the men and the circumstances of their impressment. James Boland and William Peat were impressed by Lieutenant Petley found stowed away on the ship Knapton ion 26 July with no Protection of indentures. Charles Ensor and James Hamilton were impressed by Lieutenant Petley found stowed away on the ship John on 26 July with no indentures on them. Says that there are many false documents being produced to try to protect men from being impressed and cites the case of William Johnstone, currently on HMS Corso, and recently impressed and who has for some time evaded service by passing for an Apprentice by the name of John Sullivan.

Folios 319-320: enclosure with folios 317-318. Letter dated 26 July 1812 by J P Stokes for [Vans Christie?], 26 Love Lane, East Cheap, London, to the Admiralty. Requesting the discharge of John Boland and William Peate who have both been impressed from his ship the Knapton on her return to Gravesend from Jamaica. Claims they are both protected as Apprentices.

Folios 321-322: enclosure with folios 317-318. Letter dated 28 July 1812 by J Higgin, 18 London Street, Fenchurch Street, to the Admiralty. Enclosing an application for the release of two boys employed by him who have been impressed from on board the ship the John.

Folios 323-324: enclosure with folios 317-318. Letter dated 28 July 1812 by William Butler, London to the Admirlty. Application for the release of his apprentices Charles Ensor and James Hamilton alias James Burrows, and son of John Hamilton, who were impressed in Gravesend from on board the ship the John, John Spencer Master, sailing from Jamaica.
