Folios 164-165: John Smith, HMS Beagle. Killybegs. Expressing regret that, despite every effort and great encouragement to men to volunteer, only four have enlisted. Feels that only a considerable bounty, paid in the country to assist their wives and parents, would induce them to come forward. Mentions that HMS Barbara has recently sent out an advertisement offering a payment of £10 and the men may be waiting for her to arrive. Recounts how attempts to impress men from fishing boats rebutted in the crews fleeing to the mountains and only old men and young boys rebuking to the vessels. Says he will return, as first ordered, to Plymouth at the beginning of July.
