Date

Description

Folios 140-141: [name?], Lieutenant, Impress Service, Greenock. States the case of Duncan McConechy, aged 21, Mate of the Elizabeth, who was impressed late at night at some distance from his ship and with no Affidavit on him.

Folios 142-143: enclosure with folios 140-141. Letter dated 18 June 1812 by Neilson & Hunter, Glasgow, to the Admiralty. Encloses petition for the release of the Mate of one of their vessels.

Folios 144-145: enclosure with folios 140-141. Neilson & Hunter, Merchants, Glasgow to the Admiralty. Undated petition for the release of Duncan McConechy, Chief Mate of the Elizabeth, who was impressed on 3 June 1812, the day after the ship arrived from Trinidad carrying a cargo of sugar and cotton. States that McConechy was impressed before the cargo, valued at £20,000, was discharged despite the fact that it is well known in the trade that the Mate has sole responsibility for the loading and discharge of cargo and thus placing the owners at risk of losing money from possible damage to the cargo by an inexperienced replacement Mate. Also mentions a £200 penalty placed on Mates by the government to prevent smuggling.
