Description

Folios 93-94: James Slade, HMS Experiment, Falmouth. States the case of William Currant, aged 41, Shipwright, who was impressed, along with James Penaluna, out of the Duke of Montrose Packet at the request of Mr Christopher Saverland, the Agent for Packets, for using abusive and scurrilous language to Captain White of the Queen Charlotte Packet whilst in Gibraltar Bay. Reports that he is holding the men at the request of the Post Master General until their conduct can be investigated on the return of Captain White.

Folios 95-96: enclosure with folios 93-94. Letter dated 25 May 1812 by William Currant, late Carpenter of the Duke of Montrose Packet ship, Falmouth, to the Admiralty. Petitions for his discharge saying he has a Protection as a Packet seaman and outlines the incident involving Captain White of the Princess Charlotte Packet which has led to him being impressed. Claims Captain White was abusive and threatened to beat him and the other men from the Duke of Montrose with a handpike. Offers to apologise to Captain White if any of his words or actions has caused offence. Petition is countersigned by Commanders under whom William Currant has sailed: [John Node?], Master of the Duke of Montrose, [P P Wyrle?] and Thomas Monsell; and a character reference from R H Hitchins a Curate of Falmouth, J B Wildboze a Dissenting Minister, J W Dowell and John Givennap.
