Folios 520-521: James Keith Shephard, Gravesend. He writes about John Smith a man whom he considers to be a deserter from the Navy.He reports that he has made enquiries among watermen and on ships and there is not doubt in his mind that Smith is a seafarer. When he was first apprehended he had said he had worked on the Collier The Jane. The Captain had then made enquiries at the Customs House and the Coal Exchange where the information they had about The Jane and also name of her Master was different to that given by Smith.
