Folios 294-295: Captain (likely to be Captain James Bladen Capel) HMS La Hogue, Spithead. He sends enclosures from Mr John Hammond who is on board the Prison Ship Vengeance and recommends that the young man be allowed to try and pass his examinations.
Folios 296-297: enclosure with folios 294-295. Letter dated 20 April 1812 by John Hammond HM Prison Ship Vengeance, Portsmouth Harbour. He recounts his history of education and service as a sailor both in naval vessels and merchant vessels. He was pressed in May 1807 and now is aboard the Vengeance.
Folio 298: enclosure with folios 294-295. Letter dated 13 February 1813 by John Wharton, HM Prison Ship Vengeance. He confirms that John Hammond was a midshipman from 23 March 1811 to 1812 Feb 13 and reports he was a diligent and deserving officer.
Folio 299: enclosure with folios 294-295. Document entitled 'A list of ships on which I have served'.
Folio 300: enclosure with folios 294-295. Captain Bladen Capel. An undated letter confirming that John Hammond had served on HMS Phoebe. Though badly wounded in an engagement with the French he commends him as a good officer.
