Folios 201-202: John Smith, HMS Beagle, Portsmouth. He writes in response to a request for an explanation for the neglect of the joint bolts of the cannonades of his ship. He confirms that the joint bolts were taken out and examined regularly whenever possible but given the severe weather during last winter the joints in question rusted and could not be removed until the ship reached land. He sayes he does not feel he is to blame for this state of affairs.
