Hamilton sayes he is 18 years old but he looks older.

Folio 199-200: enclosure with folios 197-198. Letter dated 30 March 1812 by Lieutenant Andrew Young, Falmouth, about John Hamilton who was impressed and put aboard HMS Experiment. He records that at the age of 14 Hamilton was apprenticed to a Joiner and Cabinet maker named Benjamin Chelew. Hamilton decided he would prefer seafaring and so his master released him and so he went to sea. However, he gave it up because he found he was unable to cope with the arduous work required and so he returned to his Master for three years in order to complete his apprenticeship and there he remained under the terms of his indenture until he was impressed. Young reports that he has asked for affidavits attesting to these matters. He also asks that Hamilton be released.
